Removing sole Exchange server leaves objects in Active Directory
If the sole Exchange server is removed from the Active Directory forest without using the installation wizard, or if a previous installation attempt was abandoned, entries from those installations exist in the Active Directory. The entries from those previous installations may prevent future successful installations of Exchange in the same forest. The following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles describe how to remove orphaned Exchange organizational objects from the original forestprep procedure from Active Directory, so that you can reinstall the first Exchange server into the forest:

NOTE: Use the procedures in the preceding articles with caution. If you use the procedures in the preceding articles after you successfully install Exchange, all of the existing Exchange servers no longer function properly.
Exchange Server 5.5 LDAP port must change when installed on a Windows domain controller
If Exchange Server 5.5 is installed on an Windows domain controller, the following Setup actions do not work if the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) port for the Exchange Server 5.5 directory service is not changed:
- Adding a new Exchange 2000 server to the same site that the Exchange Server 5.5 computer belongs to.
- Upgrading the Exchange Server 5.5 computer that resides on the Microsoft Windows 2000 domain controller.
You need to reconfigure Exchange Server 5.5 to use another port because Active Directory already occupies Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) port 389. Because the Exchange installation wizard expects the Exchange Server 5.5 computer's LDAP port to be available, you need to reconfigure Exchange Server 5.5. Failed upgrade from Exchange Server 5.5
If you upgraded an Exchange Server 5.5 computer, but the upgrade stopped working during the installation wizard, and the installation wizard cannot successfully re-install or completely remove Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003, you need to roll back the Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003 installation so that you can run Exchange setup again. Insufficient permissions
When you attempt to add a computer that is running Exchange 2000 Server to an existing Exchange Server 5.5 site, you may receive the following error message:

Domain Name System (DNS) issues
If Domain Name System (DNS) settings on a domain controller or member server are not correctly configured, a variety of failures may occur during Exchange setup. Even if you can successfully ping by name, this does not guarantee that DNS resolution is working properly. Refer to the following Knowledge Base articles for additional information about running the Nltest and Netdiag support utilities:

Domainprep changes have not replicated throughout domain
If you have performed domain preparation and given ample time for replication, Setup still may not work, and the following error message may be displayed:
Either a custom security policy has removed the domain controller privileges that were assigned by the domainprep procedure, or site replication has been scheduled to replicate at a later time. To determine which domain controller does not have the necessary rights, use the Policytest utility.

Forestprep or Domainprep have not completed successfully
When you upgrade Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003 for the first time, you may receive the following error message:

Insufficient Active Directory permissions
You may receive the following error message even after you ensure that Active Directory has replicated the most recent changes to all of the domain controllers:

Missing Active Directory Connections container

Installing first Exchange server as clustered server
If the first Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003 installation into an Exchange Server 5.5 site is a Windows clustered server, the installation of Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003 may proceed, but that server will not be able to replicate configuration information with the Exchange Server 5.5 computers. This is because the Site Replication Service (SRS) is not a clusterable component and is not supported on clustered servers. Because the SRS is enabled automatically on the first non-clustered Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003 computer in a mixed-mode administrative group or site, you must first uninstall the Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003 cluster, install a non-clustered Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003 computer in the Exchange Server 5.5 site, and then re-install the Exchange cluster.
The SRS replicates configuration information between Exchange Server 5.5 and Active Directory and works in conjunction with the Active Directory Connector (ADC).
