SYMPTOMS

All the page numbers in a Microsoft Word document are unexpectedly changed to 0 (zero).

NOTE: This behavior causes the page numbers to be both displayed and printed as 0.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if both of the following conditions are true:

  • You insert a table into the header or footer section of a Word document.


-and-

  • You insert a drawing object into a cell in the table.


RESOLUTION

Service Pack Information

This problem is corrected in Office XP Service Pack 3. To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Hotfix Information

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing to further ensure product quality. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Office XP Word 2002 Public Update that contains this hotfix.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, remove the drawing object from the table, and then insert the drawing object directly into the header or footer (not in a table cell).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Office XP Service Pack 3.
