WD2002: Nothing Happens When You Click a Picture That Contains a Hyperlink

SYMPTOMS

When you click a picture that contains a hyperlink, nothing occurs. You are not connected to the hyperlink target as expected.

Or, If the hyperlink references a bookmark, the hyperlink does not work as expected.

Note When you click an AutoShape picture that contains a hyperlink, the hyperlink works as expected.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if all the following conditions are true:

You insert a text box into a document.

-and-

You insert a picture into the text box.

-and-

You insert a hyperlink into the picture.

RESOLUTION

Service Pack Information

The global version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

WORKAROUND

Use one of the following methods to work around this problem.

Method 1: Convert the Text Box to a Frame

If your text box contains a picture with a hyperlink, you can convert the text box to a frame so that the hyperlinked picture works as expected. To do this, follow these steps:

If the text box is on a drawing canvas, drag it off the canvas.
Position the insertion point inside the text box, and the Text Box toolbar appears.
On the Format menu, click Text Box.
In the Format Text Box dialog box, click the Text Box tab, and then click Convert to Frame. Click OK if you receive the following message:

When you convert this drawing object to a frame, some of the drawing object's formatting may be lost. Do you want to continue?

Method 2: Insert the Picture in a Table into the Text Box

If you insert a table into the text box, and then insert the picture into that table, a hyperlink that you insert in the picture works as expected. To do this, follow these steps:

In the open document, position the insertion point in the text box that you want.
On the Table menu, point to Insert, and then click Table.
In the Insert Table dialog box, change the value in the Number of columns box to 1, change the value in the Number of rows box to 1, and then click OK.
With the insertion point in the table cell, point to Picture on the Insert menu, and then insert the picture that you want.
With the picture selected, click Hyperlink on the Insert menu, and then insert the hyperlink that you want.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Office XP Service Pack 3.
