SUMMARY

Microsoft Office smart tags are a set of buttons that appear after certain actions or automatic changes occur. This article explains how to turn off some of the buttons in Microsoft PowerPoint, so that the buttons do not appear.

The buttons appear as small icons that blend into the document, and then increase in size and contrast when you rest the mouse pointer over them. The buttons have a menu of common commands that are useful after an action or an automatic change occurs.

Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 has the following built-in buttons:

  • Paste Options
  • AutoCorrect Options
  • AutoFit Options

Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 and Microsoft PowerPoint 2002 have the following built-in buttons:

  • Paste Options
  • AutoCorrect Options
  • Automatic Layout Options
  • AutoFit Options

You can prevent all of these buttons, except for the AutoFit Options button, from appearing in PowerPoint.

How to turn off the Paste Options button

To prevent the Paste Options button from appearing, follow these steps, as appropriate for the version of PowerPoint that you are running.

PowerPoint 2007

  1. Start PowerPoint 2007.
  2. Click the Microsoft Office Button[GRAPHIC: Microsoft Office Button], and then click PowerPoint Options.
  3. On the Advanced tab, click to clear the Show Paste Options buttons check box, and then click OK.

PowerPoint 2003 and PowerPoint 2002

  1. Start PowerPoint 2003 or PowerPoint 2002.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. On the Edit tab, click to clear the Show Paste Options buttons check box, and then click OK.

How to turn off the AutoCorrect Options button

To prevent the AutoCorrect Options button from appearing, follow these steps, as appropriate for the version of PowerPoint that you are running.

PowerPoint 2007

  1. Start PowerPoint 2007.
  2. Click the Microsoft Office Button[GRAPHIC: Microsoft Office Button], and then click PowerPoint Options.
  3. On the Proofing tab, click AutoCorrect Options.
  4. On the AutoCorrect tab, click to clear the Show AutoCorrect Options Buttons check box, and then click OK.

PowerPoint 2003 and PowerPoint 2002

  1. Start PowerPoint 2003 or PowerPoint 2002.
  2. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options.
  3. On the AutoCorrect tab, click to clear the Show AutoCorrect Options Buttons check box, and then click OK.

How to turn off the Automatic Layout button

To prevent the Automatic Layout button from appearing in PowerPoint 2003 and PowerPoint 2002, follow these steps:

  1. Start PowerPoint 2003 or PowerPoint 2002.
  2. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options.
  3. On the AutoFormat As You Type tab, click to clear the Automatic layout for inserted objects check box, and then click OK.
