SUMMARY
This article describes how to acquire, install, and remove the Active Directory Client Extension (DSClient) for Windows NT 4.0.
NOTE: Although the DSClient is available on the Windows 95 and Windows 98 operating systems, this article concerns the Windows NT 4.0 version. Therefore, any reference to DSClient, unless otherwise stated, refers to the DSClient for Windows NT 4.0.

The DSClient takes advantage of features provided by the Windows 2000 Active Directory Service. These client extensions were developed for customers who want to deploy Windows 2000 Server in environments with Windows NT 4.0-based clients.
Acquiring the DSClient
The DSClient for Windows NT 4.0 is freely available for download from the following Microsoft Web site:
The DSClient for Windows 95 and Windows 98 is available on any Windows 2000 Server, Advanced Server, or DataCenter CD-ROM.
Installing the DSClient
The prerequisites for the DSClient are:
- Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a.
- Internet Explorer 4.01 or later.
Download the DSClient.exe self-extracting executable installation file. Running this file will launch an installation wizard.

Removing the DSClient
The DSClient can be removed through the Add/Remove Programs utility in Control Panel:
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
Double-click Directory Services Client.
NOTE: The following dynamic link libraries (DLLs) will not be removed:
- Netlogon.dll
- Netapi32.dll
- Mup.sys
- Wkssvc.dll
- Wldap32.dll
All other DLL files will be removed. A reboot will be necessary if DLL files to be removed are currently in use.
