This article was previously published under Q288256

SYMPTOMS

When you start the Import/Export Wizard in Outlook 2000 (in either the Internet Mail Only or the Corporate or Workgroup installation), you may receive the following error message:

MSOutlook cannot start the import/export engine, an error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning properly, would you like to repair?

You may also find that the Import and Export option on the File menu is dimmed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, repair Microsoft Office 2000:

  1. Search for Mapi*.* files, and then rename to *.old any that have an .exe, .dll, or .inf file name extension.
  2. Locate and then delete the following files if they exist: Extend.dat, Views.dat, Outcmd.dat, Frmcache.dat, and Outform.dat.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Start Task Manager, and then quit the programs that are running, by clicking the program and then clicking End Task. Do this for all the programs except Systray.exe and Explorer.exe.
  5. Insert the Office 2000 CD-ROM into the drive, click Repair Office 2000, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
  6. Restart the computer.
