ADSI: AV Occurs When Using SSL Connection Established by Wldap32 in ADSI 2.5 on Windows NT 4.0

Q286158

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Active Directory Service Interfaces, version 2.5, used with:
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5 for Windows NT 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to establish a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) connection for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) with ADSI 2.5 on Windows NT 4.0, you may encounter an access violation (AV) in Wldap32.dll.

CAUSE

The interface for software to utilize SSL changed between Windows NT 4.0 and Microsoft Windows 2000. With Internet Explorer 5.5 on the computer, the Windows 2000 interfaces are used, and these are initialized differently than those that originally were available to Windows NT 4.0. This can lead to situations where unexpected data are passed around, causing this access violation.

RESOLUTION

Windows 2000

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
