SYMPTOMS

When you try to install one of the programs listed in the "Applies to" section, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:

Canceling the installation wizard. Installation wizard was interrupted before Picture It! Photo could be completed.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if one of the following conditions is true:

  • The CD ROM may be damaged or dirty.
  • One or more of the following programs are missing or damaged:
    • Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.5
    • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5
    • Microsoft Windows Installer


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the method best suited for your cause.

Examine the CDROM

Remove the Program

To remove the program, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click the program that you want to remove, and then click Add/Remove.
  4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to remove the program.
  5. Click OK, and then close Control Panel.

Remove Program Folders and Registry Keys

To remove program folders and registry keys, download and run the Picture It! Publishing 2001 Utility for your version of Microsoft Windows.

Important If you installed Picture It! Publishing that ships in the Microsoft Works Suite 2000 or Microsoft Works Suite 2001 package, to prevent a licensing agreement error message, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
  2. Expand the Program Files folder.
  3. Expand the WorksBkUp folder.
  4. Click the Works Shared folder.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  6. Expand the Common Files folder.
  7. Click the Microsoft Shared folder.
  8. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
  9. Click Yes to All to overwrite existing files and folders.
  10. Quit Microsoft Windows Explorer.

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.

Download and Run the Windows CleanUp Utility

Run the Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp utility to remove the Windows Installer registry settings, and then reinstall Picture It!. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Download, install, and then run the Windows Installer CleanUp utility to remove the Windows Installer registry settings associated with your products installation.

  2. To use the Windows CleanUp utility, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Installer Clean Up.
    2. Select the program that you want to remove, and then click Remove.
    3. Click OK, and then click Exit.
    Note Because the Windows Installer CleanUp utility removes Windows Installer related registry settings and not the program files, make sure that you install your program in the same folder it was originally installed in to prevent duplication of files on your hard disk.

Clean Boot Your Computer

To clean boot your computer, use the appropriate method for your version of Microsoft Windows.

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

Microsoft Windows 98

Run the System Configuration Utility (Msconfig.exe) to perform a clean boot. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Click the General tab. Click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the following check boxes:
    • Process Config.sys File
    • Process Autoexec.bat File
    • Process Winstart.bat File (if available)
    • Process Win.ini File
    • Load Startup Group Items
  3. Click OK.

When you are prompted to restart the computer, do so.

Note To restore your original startup configuration, rerun the System Configuration Utility (Msconfig.exe), click the General tab, and then click Normal Startup.

Microsoft Windows 95

  1. Restart the computer. When you see the "Starting Windows 95" message, press the F8 key, and then click Command Prompt Only on the Startup menu.
  2. At the command prompt, type win, and then press ENTER. Press and hold down the SHIFT key until the Windows startup sequence is completed.
  3. Turn off any antivirus or disk tool programs that are installed on the computer.

  1. Quit all running programs except Explorer and Systray. To do this, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, click the program that you want to quit, and then click End Task.


If you receive a message stating that the program is busy or not responding, click End Task again.

  1. Repeat step 4 to quit all programs except Explorer and Systray.

Note To restore your original Startup options, restart the computer as usual, and then turn on any antivirus or disk tool programs installed on the computer. For information about how to turn on these programs, see the printed or online documentation for the program.

Download and Install the DCOM 98 Update

To download and install the DCOM update, use the appropriate method for your version of Microsoft Windows.

Note If you are running Windows Millennium Edition (ME), go to the "Reinstall the Program" section.

Microsoft Windows 98

  1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. In the Search using box, click Keyword Search.
  3. In the Operating System box, click Windows 98.
  4. In the Keywords box, type dcom, and then click Find It!
  5. In the list of found files, click the DCOM98 for Windows 98 link.
  6. Under Download Now, click the DCOM98 for Windows 98 link.
  7. Click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.
  8. In the Save in box, click Desktop, and then click Save.
  9. Double-click the DCOM98 for Windows 98 icon on the desktop.
  10. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to install DCOM98 for Windows 98.

Microsoft Windows 95

  1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. In the Search using box, click Keyword Search.
  3. In the Operating System box, click Windows 95.
  4. In the Keywords box, type dcom, and then click Find It!
  5. In the list of found files, click the DCOM95 for Windows 95 link.
  6. Under Download Now, click the DCOM95 for Windows 95 link.
  7. Click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.
  8. In the Save in box, click Desktop, and then click Save.
  9. Double-click the DCOM95 for Windows 95 icon on the desktop.
  10. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to install DCOM95 for Windows 95.

Download and install the MDAC 2.5 Update

To download the MDAC 2.5 update (Mdac_Typ.exe):

  1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. In the Search using box, click Keyword Search.
  3. In the Operating System box, click the version of Microsoft Windows that you are using.
  4. In the Keywords box, type mdac, and then click Find It!
  5. In the list of found files, click the Microsoft Data Access Components link.
  6. Under Download Now, click the MDAC_TYP.EXE - 7,857 Kb link.
  7. Click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.
  8. In the Save in box, click Desktop, and then click Save.

To install the MDAC 2.5 update:

  1. Double click the Mdac_typ.exe file on the Windows desktop.
  2. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to install the MDAC 2.5 update.
  3. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

If you experience problems when you install the MDAC 2.5 update, restart the computer in Safe mode, and then repeat these steps to install the MDAC 2.5 update.

Note You may receive the following error message after you restart the computer:

Unable to open response file C:\Temp\Odbcconf.tmp.

Install Microsoft Internet Explorer

To install Internet Explorer 5.5:

  1. Insert the installation CD-ROM for the program that you want to install into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key when you insert the CD-ROM to prevent the Setup program from starting automatically.
  2. Click Start, click Run, and then type cdrom:\PIP\Redist\IE\ie5setup.exe in the Open box.


In this example, cdrom is the drive letter of your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.

  1. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to install Internet Explorer 5.5.

Reinstall the Program

Insert the installation CD-ROM for the program that you want to install into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen to reinstall the program.
