SYMPTOMS

When you install the Microsoft IntelliPoint software, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • The Mouse tool in Control Panel does not list the Microsoft IntelliMouse pointing device that is connected to your computer.
  • The IntelliPoint software setup program does not prompt you to select a country, accept the End User License Agreement (EULA), or prompt you for other input.
  • Fewer than 10 files are copied into the Mouse folder.

If you try to remove the IntelliPoint software, you may receive the following error message:

Uninstal.dll could not be found.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if any one of the following conditions is true:

  • The IntelliPoint setup folder is missing or damaged.
  • You are running the ZipMagic compression utility on your computer.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.

Restart Your Computer in Safe Mode

To restart your computer in Safe Mode use the appropriate steps for your operating system:

Microsoft Windows XP

  1. Click Start, click Shut Down, and then, in the drop-down list, click Shut down.
  2. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart, and then click OK.
  3. When you see the "Please select the operating system to start message", press the F8 key.
  4. Use the arrow keys to select the appropriate safe mode option, and then press ENTER.
  5. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, select the installation that you have to access by using the arrow keys, and then press ENTER.

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Microsoft Windows 98 and Microsoft Windows 95

  1. Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
  2. Click Restart The Computer, and then click Yes.
  3. If you are running Windows 95, as soon as you see the message Starting Windows 95, press F5.


If you are running Windows 98 or Windows Me, press and hold down the SHIFT key as soon as the POST (Power on Self Test) is complete.

  1. Close the message about Safe Mode.

Show All Files

To show all files:

  1. On the desktop, double-click My Computer.
  2. In Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000, and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), click Tools, and then click Folder Options.


In Windows 98 and Windows 95, click View, and then click Options or Folder Options.

  1. Click the View tab.
  2. Click Show All Files or Show hidden files and folders.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Close all of the open windows on the desktop.

Remove the IntelliPoint Software

To remove the IntelliPoint software:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


NOTE: If you use Windows XP, click Start and then click Control Panel.

  1. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Double-click Microsoft IntelliPoint.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen to remove the IntelliPoint software.
  4. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click NO.

Remove ZipMagic

If ZipMagic is not installed on your computer, continue to the next method.

To remove ZipMagic:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


NOTE: If you use Windows XP, click Start and then click Control Panel.

  1. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Double-click ZipMagic.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen to remove ZipMagic.
  4. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click NO.

Delete the Mouse Folder

To delete the Mouse folder:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type the following line:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Hardware

  3. Click OK.
  4. If the Mouse folder exists, right-click the Mouse folder, and then click Delete.
  5. Close the Microsoft Hardware folder.

Delete the {ABEA93FA-8D65-11D2-98AB-00C04F79C5D1} Folder

To delete the {ABEA93FA-8D65-11D2-98AB-00C04F79C5D1} folder:

  1. Click Start, point to Find or Search, and then click Files or Folders or For Files or Folders.
  2. In the Named or Search for files or folders named box, type the following line:

    {ABEA93FA-8D65-11D2-98AB-00C04F79C5D1}

  3. In the Look in box, click My Computer.
  4. Click Find Now or Search Now.
  5. Delete all of the folders that are found.
  6. Close all of the windows on the desktop.

Empty the Temp Folder and Temporary Internet Files Folder

To empty the Temp folder and the Temporary Internet Files folder, follow the appropriate steps for your version of Windows.

Windows 95

To empty the Temp folder:

  1. Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
  2. Click Restart the Computer in MS-DOS mode, and then click OK.
  3. Type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you type each line:

    cd temp
    del *.tmp
    exit

If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer, follow these steps to empty the Temporary Internet Files folder:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Internet Options.
  3. Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete files.
  4. Click OK, and then click OK again.
  5. Close Control Panel.

Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Me, or Windows 98

To empty the Temp folder and the Temporary Internet Files folder, use Disk Cleanup:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.
  2. Click C:, the drive in which Windows is installed.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Click to select the Temporary files and the Temporary Internet Files check boxes.
  5. Click OK, and then click Yes to confirm the deletion.

Delete the InstallShield Folder

  1. Double-click My Computer.
  2. In the My Computer dialog box, double-click C:.
  3. Double-click the Program Files folder.
  4. Double-click the Common Files folder.
  5. Right-click the InstallShield folder, click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm deletion.
  6. Close the My Computer dialog box.

Clean Boot Your Computer

To clean boot your computer, follow the appropriate steps for your version of Microsoft Windows.

Windows XP or Windows Me

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the following check boxes:
    • Load Static VXDs


  4. On the Win.ini tab, click to clear the following check boxes:
    • Load=


  5. Click OK. When you are prompted to restart the computer, do so.

NOTE: To restore your original Startup options, click Normal Startup on the General tab in the System Configuration Utility.

Microsoft Windows 98

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the following check boxes:
    • Process Config.sys File
    • Process Autoexec.bat File
    • Process Winstart.bat File (if available)
    • Load Startup Group Items


  4. On the Win.ini tab, click to clear the following check boxes:
    • Load=


  5. Click OK. When you are prompted to restart the computer, do so.

NOTE: To restore your original Startup options, click Normal Startup on the General tab in the System Configuration Utility.

Microsoft Windows 95

  1. Restart the computer. When you see the Starting Windows 95 message, press the F8 key, and then select Command Prompt Only from the Startup menu.
  2. At the command prompt, type win, and then press ENTER. Press and hold down the SHIFT key until the Windows startup sequence is complete.
  3. Turn off any antivirus or disk tool programs that are installed on the computer.

  1. Quit all running programs except Explorer and Systray. To do this, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, click the program that you want to quit, and then click End Task. If you receive a message that the program is busy or not responding, click End Task again. Repeat this step to quit all programs except Explorer and Systray.

NOTE: To restore your original Startup options, restart the computer typically, and then turn on any antivirus or disk tool programs that are installed on the computer.

Reinstall the IntelliPoint Software

Insert the IntelliPoint software CD-ROM. If the setup program starts automatically, follow the instructions on the screen to install the IntelliPoint software. If the setup program does not start automatically, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type cdrom:\setup, where cdrom is the drive letter of your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to install the IntelliPoint software.
