SYMPTOMS

If you use an administrative e-mail address that contains a period (or dot) in the name part of the address, the address may not be kept in the correct format when it is stored in the SOA record of a DNS zone.

CAUSE

The administrative e-mail address is stored in the RNAME field of the SOA record. The format of this entry is name.domain.tld. The first period is translated to an at sign (@), so the example listed above is translated to name@domain.tld. If the name part of the e-mail address contains a period, as in First.Last@domain.tld, an escape character must be used for the first period. As per Request for Comments (RFC) 1035, the correct format is First\.Last.domain.tld. Windows 2000-based DNS servers do not store this format correctly.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
