FIX: Attention During Tempdb Auto Stats May Result in Server Shutdown

SYMPTOMS

If the SQL Server server receives an attention during the creation of automatic statistics for a temporary table, an abnormal shutdown of SQL Server may occur. A stack dump is written to the SQL Server error log followed by this error message:

Error: 0, Severity: 21, State: 0
SQL Server is aborting. Fatal exception 0 caught.

WORKAROUND

Disable the auto create statistics and auto update statistics database options for the tempdb database.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server 7.0. This problem has been corrected in U.S. Service Pack 3 for Microsoft SQL Server 7.0. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
