SYMPTOMS
A STANDBY RESTORE attempt of a database log taken from a source database, with shrink operations enabled and active, may cause the following 9004 error message to occur and a failure to complete the load:
WORKAROUND
The 9004 error message indicates that the log dump is corrupt. However, for this issue the log is intact and valid. Alternate restore options do complete.
Use the the NORECOVERY or RECOVERY option to restore the database.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server 7.0. This problem has been corrected in U.S. Service Pack 3 for Microsoft SQL Server 7.0. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

MORE INFORMATION
The log shrink operation takes place at CHECKPOINT time. Thus, you can have active Shrink requests that do not process until the log backup is complete or normal CHECKPOINT activity occurs.
