SYMPTOMS
The Exchange Server version 5.5 Service Pack 3 message transfer agent (MTA) may stop unexpectedly with a call stack that is similar to the following when the MTA attempts to gain access to a particular object in the MTA database:

The MTA may log several events that are similar to the following before the MTA stops unexpectedly:
In this particular case, the MTA stops while it attempts to gain access to object 060008AC or db0008ac.dat, which the MTA referenced in the event ID 2182 error message.
RESOLUTION

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, run MTACheck several times. This may enable the MTA to restart.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5 Service Pack 3. This problem was first corrected in Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 4.
