ICS Host Stops Forwarding Packets After DHCP Lease Is Half Expired

SYMPTOMS

Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Network Address Translation (NAT) functionality stops working after 50 percent of the public network DHCP lease has expired. When this occurs, each network adapter on the NAT host can ping hosts on its corresponding network, but the private network cannot ping public networks by using the NAT host. The NAT host public interface does not forward replies from public hosts to the private network.

Releasing and renewing the address resolves the problem, but only until the next DHCP lease time-out event occurs.

CAUSE

This situation occurs because the DHCP Net Table Entry (NTE) in the routing table is set incorrectly after 50 percent of the lease time has expired. This causes all packets to be delivered locally instead of being forwarded to the private interface.

RESOLUTION

A supported software update is now available from Microsoft as Windows CE 3.0 Core OS QFE 2. To resolve this problem immediately, click the following article number for information about obtaining Windows CE Platform Builder and core operating system software updates:
