FIX: SQL Server 7.0 Clients on Windows 2000 May Cause Extra Trip to Domain Controller During Integrated Logon

Article ID: 274801

Article Last Modified on 3/14/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q274801

BUG #: 57801 (SQLBUG_70)

SYMPTOMS

A SQL Server 7.0 client on Microsoft Windows 2000 attempts to initiate a Kerberos logon to the domain controller, which may fail. The client then attempts NTLM authentication, which causes an additional trip to the domain controller.

CAUSE

SQL Server 7.0 clients that authenticate against a Windows 2000 domain controller prompt the controller to perform a Kerberos logon. This logon is denied by the domain controller because it does not recognize a parameter that is passed by the client. The domain controller then reverts to performing a NTLM logon, which causes an extra trip to the controller.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server 7.0. This problem has been corrected in U.S. Service Pack 3 for Microsoft SQL Server 7.0. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
