SYMPTOMS

When you use one of the programs that are listed in the "Applies to" section, you may experience one of the following symptoms:

  • Fonts may not be displayed in the program.
  • Fonts may be displayed as symbols in the program.
  • Fonts may be distorted in the program.

CAUSE

These issues may occur if one of the following conditions is true:

  • Your video adapter does not meet the game requirements.
  • The video driver that is installed in the computer is not working correctly.
  • The video drivers for your video adapter are outdated.
  • Too many fonts are installed on the computer.
  • One or more fonts are damaged.
  • A font that is included with Microsoft Windows has been replaced by an incompatible version of the font.
  • The program is using the Monotype Sorts font instead of the default font for the program.

RESOLUTION

To resolve these issues, use the following methods in the order that they appear in.

After you try each method, test to see whether the issue is resolved. If the issue continues to occur, go to the next method.

Method 1: Verify the minimum video requirements

The video adapter must have at least the minimum video memory that the game requires to display text in the game. Make sure that the video adapter meets the minimum requirements. See the system requirements that are listed on the product's box or visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Use the DirectX Diagnostic Tool to determine how much video memory is available. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. To do this in Windows Vista, click Start[GRAPHIC: the Start button], type dxdiag in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

To open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool in Windows XP and earlier versions, click Start, click Run, type dxdiag, and then click OK.

  1. Click the Display tab or the Display 1 tab.
  2. Note the video memory that is listed on the Approx. Total Memory line, and then click Exit.

Click the Play button to view this streaming media demonstration.

Method 2: Adjust hardware acceleration

To adjust graphics hardware acceleration, use the method for the operating system that you are using.

Windows Vista

  1. Click Start[GRAPHIC: the Start button], type desk.cpl in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
  2. In the Display Settings dialog box, click Advanced Settings.
  3. On the Troubleshoot tab, click Change Settings.

  5. Click OK, and then click Close.
  6. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

Method 3: Update the video adapter drivers

Contact the manufacturer of your video adapter to obtain and install the latest version of the driver for your video adapter. For information about how to contact the manufacturer of your video adapter or sound card, see the "More Information" section.

To see whether applicable driver updates are available, visit the following Microsoft Windows Update Web site:

Click the Play button to view this streaming media demonstration. To determine the name and manufacturer of your video adapter, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Display tab.
  2. Under Device, look for Name and Manufacturer. Click Exit.

Click the Play button to view this streaming media demonstration. If the issue continues to occur, go to the next method.

Method 4: Reduce the number of fonts in the Fonts folder to 700 or less

You may have games problems if you have too many fonts in Windows.

See how many fonts are installed

  1. Open the Fonts item in Control Panel. To do this in Windows Vista, click Start[GRAPHIC: the Start button], type Control fonts in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

[GRAPHIC: User Account Control permission] If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

To open the Fonts item in Control Panel in Windows XP and earlier versions, click Start, click Run, type Control fonts, and then click OK.

  1. On the status bar note how many fonts you have installed on your computer. The status bar is located in the lower-left corner.

If more than 700 fonts are installed on the computer, reduce the number of fonts.

Reduce the number of fonts

Note Before you move additional fonts from the Fonts folder, try to determine which fonts the Microsoft multimedia program uses so that you do not move those fonts. To do this, follow these steps:

Windows Vista

  1. Hold down the SHIFT key and insert the installation CD-ROM for the program into the CD drive or the DVD drive to prevent the program from starting automatically.
  2. Click Start[GRAPHIC: the Start button], and then click Search.
  3. In the Search box, type .ttf, and then click Advanced Search.
  4. In the Location box, select the CD drive or the DVD drive that contains the CD for the program, and then click Search.
  5. Note the name of the fonts that are displayed.
  6. Repeat steps 2 through 5 but search for "*.fon" files.

Windows XP and earlier versions

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

  1. Hold down the SHIFT key and insert the installation CD-ROM for the program into the CD drive or the DVD drive to prevent the program from starting automatically.
  2. Click Start, point to Find or Search, and then click All files or Folders.
  3. In the Named or All or part of the file name box, type *.ttf.
  4. In the Look in box, click the CD drive or the DVD drive, and then click Find Now or Search.
  5. Note the name of the fonts that are displayed.
  6. Repeat steps c through e but search for "*.fon" files.

To reduce the number of fonts in the Fonts folder, follow these steps:

  1. Close all programs.
  2. Create a new folder on the Microsoft Windows desktop.

To create a new folder, right-click a blank area on the Windows desktop, point to New, click Folder, type the name that you want, and then press ENTER.
  3. Double-click the new folder to open it.
  4. Open the Fonts item in Control panel. To do this in Windows Vista, click Start[GRAPHIC: Start button], type Control fonts in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

To open the Fonts item in Control Panel in Windows XP and earlier versions, click Start, click Run, type Control fonts in the Open box, and then click OK.
  5. Display the windows side by side. To do this, use one of the following methods:
    • In Windows Vista, right-click a blank area of the taskbar, and then click Show Windows Side by Side.
    • In Microsoft Windows XP, right-click a blank area of the taskbar, and then click Tile Windows Horizontally.
Note The Fonts folder window and the window for the folder that you created in step 2 are displayed equally on the screen.
  6. Move any font that is 3 kilobytes (KB) or smaller from the Fonts folder to the folder that you created in step 2 of this procedure.
    • In Windows Vista, copy the fonts to the new folder, and then delete the fonts from the Fonts folder. To do this, follow these steps:
      1. Right-click and then drag the font that you want to move to the new folder that you created in step 2.
      2. Click Copy Here.
      3. In the Fonts folder, delete the font that you copied.
    • In Windows XP and earlier versions, right-click and then drag the font that you want to move to the new folder that you created in step 2. Click Move here.

To select multiple fonts, use one of the following methods:

    • To select consecutive font files, click the first item, press and hold down SHIFT, and then click the last item.
    • To select font files that are not consecutive, press and hold down CTRL, and then click each item.
  7. Test to see whether the issue is resolved. If the issue continues to occur, repeat step 6, except move the following fonts from the Fonts folder to the folder that you created in step 2:
    • Monotype Sorts
    • Monotype Sorts 2
    • Symbol
  8. Test to see whether the issue is resolved. If the issue still occurs, continue with the next step.
  9. If the issue still occurs, repeat step 6, except move the fonts that the Microsoft multimedia program uses. Then remove and reinstall the program.
