XADM: Large Number of Recipient Policies Causes Metabase Problem

Article ID: 274550

Article Last Modified on 2/26/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q274550

SYMPTOMS

When you configure a large number of recipient policies in Exchange 2000 Server (for example, more than 1,000 policies), Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) local domains that are listed in the policies may not be correctly replicated from NTDS to the Microsoft Internet Information Service (IIS) metabase.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because the algorithm that Exchange 2000 currently uses to replicate SMTP local domains that are listed in recipient policies from NTDS to the IIS metabase does not scale for a large number of policies (greater than 1,000) for the following reasons:

  • Active Directory has a page size restriction of 1,000 entries.
  • Exchange 2000 (DSAccess) does not read past the first page.
  • When a recipient policy is deleted, the directory service to metabase (also known as the metabase update service) must reread all policies to determine what should be removed from the metabase. If there are more than 1,000 policies in the system, correct deletions cannot occur.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
