SYMPTOMS

Queries that contain a TOP N PERCENT argument within a subquery may fail to run. For example, the following query:

SELECT * FROM employee
WHERE hire_date > ALL (SELECT TOP 7 PERCENT 1 FROM employee)
                

returns this error message:

Server: Msg 8623, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Internal Query Processor Error: The query processor could not produce a query plan.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server 7.0. This problem has been corrected in U.S. Service Pack 3 for Microsoft SQL Server 7.0. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
