SYMPTOMS
If you configure a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server as a smart host, and then send a message that contains a Bcc line through the server, the outgoing SMTP server to which the message is routed may add unnecessary characters to the end of the message.
These characters are visible in the mail (.eml) file that is created in the outbound message queue folder on the server. As a result, the message may be returned with a 554 error.
NOTE: This problem also occurs if you use Telnet to connect to Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) port 25 on the outgoing SMTP server, and then send a message that contains a Bcc line.
CAUSE
This problem occurs when the SMTP service filters the Bcc field, but does not accurately keep track of the characters that have already been filtered.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Commercial Internet System version 2.0.
