WMI WDM Provider Rejects Instance Data From Driver |
Q266254
The information in this article applies to:
- Windows Management Instrumentation, version 1.5, used with:
- the operating system: Microsoft Windows 2000
SYMPTOMS
The Windows Driver Model (WDM) provider does not return instance data from a WDM driver. This problem is indicated by the following entry in the WMI provider log file (Wmiprov.log):
date and time : WDM Buffer size and actual size of data do not match.
CAUSE
WDM-based device drivers (such as SCSI) use WMI to retrieve performance information, control device features, and signal events. The WDM driver provides WMI data by using its classes, and this is also known as the driver's schema. These classes are defined in a binary .mof file that is embedded in the driver. If the driver's schema contains sub-classes, a bug in WMI's WDM provider causes an invalid size calculation of the driver's classes. This ultimately prevents the driver from communicating with WMI.
