MORE INFORMATION
The Microsoft Outlook E-mail Security Update significantly changes the way that Outlook handles attachments. It also changes the way that Outlook handles requests for programmatic access. Because of the new design, any feature or program that uses any of the following features may behave differently after you install the update:
- Attachments
- The Outlook object model
- Simple Messaging Application Programming Interface, or Simple MAPI

Issues That Affect Other (Non-Office) Microsoft Products
Sending Links from Internet Explorer
If you view a Web page in Microsoft Internet Explorer, and then click the Send Link by e-mail command on the File menu, the message opens but the attachment is not visible, and there is a warning message at the top of the e-mail message that says access to the attachment has been blocked. Because the link files are of type Uniform Resource Locator (URL), this behavior is expected after you apply the security update.
Exchange Forms Designer Forms
Exchange Forms Designer (EFD) forms are not integrated into the attachment access changes. There are no changes in the behavior of how EFD forms appear or the way that attachments are accessed or handled within EFD forms, although there is one known exception. If you right-click an EFD form and choose to open the selected items from the shortcut menu, and the form contains Level 1 attachments, the item opens by using an Outlook default form instead of the EFD form. The work around is to double-click the form to open it.
Microsoft Office Files
Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint data files are not included in the unsafe file list. These programs have an additional layer of macro security that is enabled when you install the update. Microsoft Access does not provide a security setting for macros, so Access data files are included in the Level 1 list.
