SYMPTOMS
Existing floating point exceptions are not cleared before enabling notification of floating point exceptions in SQL Server 6.5. This may cause a user to incorrectly encounter a FLT_UNDERFLOW_EXCEPTION exception.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server version 6.5. This problem has been corrected in the Post Service Pack 5a Update for Microsoft SQL Server version 6.5. To install the Post Service Pack 5a Update, you must have either SQL Server 6.5 SP5 or SP5a installed.

Users may encounter FLT_UNDERFLOW_EXCEPTION errors or other floating point exceptions unexpectedly even with queries that do not appear to involve a floating point operation. In some cases, the server may stop responding (hang).
Floating point exception notification is enabled as part of detecting floating point errors when the server operates on floating point numbers. This notification is not configurable by the user.
