SYMPTOMS

If your computer is configured to use Microsoft Word 2000 as your e-mail editor for Outlook, if you have never started Word 2000, and if you create a new message or open an existing message in Outlook, you may see the following error message:

Microsoft WordMail could not be started. Try one of the following:

  • Close any open dialog boxes in Word.
  • Make sure Word is correctly installed.
  • Close other programs and try again.

A dialog box may be open in another program preventing Outlook from performing this operation. Switch to the program and close any open dialog boxes.

You receive the error message after you install Norton AntiVirus 2000.

CAUSE

The Norton AntiVirus (NAV) plug-in for Microsoft Office 2000 is preventing Outlook 2000 from properly accessing Word 2000.

RESOLUTION

Contact your antivirus software vendor to obtain either an updated version of their product or assistance with reconfiguration of their product which will resolve this problem.
