APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition

This article was previously published under Q260521

SYMPTOMS

A multi-homed Remote Installation Service (RIS) server that is configured with two or more network adapters may not answer all clients. A Pre-Boot Execution Environment (PXE) client may display an error message similar to:

No Reply from a server...

Depending on the client in use, the error message may differ.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the RIS server believes that it is not authorized to service clients even though Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is running and the DHCP server has been authorized by using the DHCP Management snap-in.

Note that running RIS on computers that are multi-homed require that DHCP also be running on the same computer with defined, active scopes. Servers that have more that one IP address bound to a single Network Adapter qualify as multi-homed and will exhibit the behavior listed in this KB article.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 1.
