SYMPTOMS
When you install Visual Studio 6.0 Service Pack 4 on a Visual SourceSafe 6.0 installation, the Readmess.htm file located in the root folder (for example, ..\VSS) is not updated with the latest version of the Readmass.htm file. The Readmess.htm file is required in the following Visual SourceSafe folders:
- ..\VSS - this folder contains a copy for the installation of Visual SourceSafe.
- ..\VSS\Netsetup.x86 - this folder contains a copy of the Readmass.htm file for remote client installations.
The ..\VSS\Netsetup.x86\Readmess.htm file is updated when you install Visual Studio 6.0 Service Pack 4 on a Visual SourceSafe 6.0 installation, but the ..\VSS root folder copy is not. This problem affects all installation configurations.
CAUSE
The reason for this problem is that earlier builds of this service pack fail to include the updated Readmess.htm file.
