PRB: User Settings Are Not Propagated from the Current User to the Default User

ID: Q259752

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

SYMPTOMS

After the graphical user interface (GUI) portion of the operating system installation is complete, any user settings that are altered by using the registry editor in audit mode do not propagate from the current user account to the default user account.

If you start Regedit in audit mode and make changes to the HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT key in the registry, the changes are not reflected in the default user account; they are only seen in the local administrator account (if that is the account that is used when you make the changes).

RESOLUTION

Use one of the following two methods to work around the problem:

  • Anything that can be defined or modified in HKEY_CURRENT_USER can also be set in the Ntuser.dat hive. The registry editor can be used to modify the Ntuser.dat hive so that all the changed settings are reflected in the default user profile. The first time a user logs on to the computer (or the domain), the default user profile is copied to the user profile and all the settings are propagated.
  • You can also use the updated Syssetup.dll file along with the updated catalog file in your distribution folder, to work around this problem.
