SYMPTOMS
If you are using a BIND-based Domain Name System (DNS) server as forwarder on a Windows 2000-based DNS server, you may receive the following error message when a client tries to dynamically update DNS records:
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the BIND-based server is caching the SOA record for the domain that was queried for. If the BIND-based server is resolving a query from its cache, the "Authoritative" bit is not set in the response packet. Because the Windows 2000-based server did not receive an authoritative answer to an SOA query, it sends a "Server Failure" response to the client, causing the dynamic update attempt not to succeed.
RESOLUTION

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 1.
