Dynamic Update Does Not Work Using BIND DNS Forwarder

Article ID: 257462

Article Last Modified on 2/20/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

This article was previously published under Q257462

SYMPTOMS

If you are using a BIND-based Domain Name System (DNS) server as forwarder on a Windows 2000-based DNS server, you may receive the following error message when a client tries to dynamically update DNS records:

Event Source: NETLOGON
Event ID: 5781
Description: Dynamic registration or deregistration of one or more DNS records failed because no DNS servers are available.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the BIND-based server is caching the SOA record for the domain that was queried for. If the BIND-based server is resolving a query from its cache, the "Authoritative" bit is not set in the response packet. Because the Windows 2000-based server did not receive an authoritative answer to an SOA query, it sends a "Server Failure" response to the client, causing the dynamic update attempt not to succeed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
