SYMPTOMS

When you run the Polish grammar checker on a document that contains certain Polish words, Word stop responding (hangs).

CAUSE

Words that cause this problem contain the Polish Latin uppercase letter L with stroke (U+0141), or Latin lowercase letter L with stroke (U+0142).

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 2.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Do one of the following:


    • Install English Office 2000, including Polish language support and Polish proofing tools (from the MultiLanguage Pack CD 5 or the Proofing Tools CD).
    • Install Polish Office 2000.
  1. In a new document, type either the word Wlochy or Suwalki. The l in each word is the Latin lowercase letter L with stroke (U+0142).
  2. Press F7 to run the spelling and grammar checker.


Result: Word stops responding. You must use Task Manager to terminate the task.
