WD97: Word Stops Responding During Spelling and Grammar Check in Page Layout View

SYMPTOMS

When you open a document in page layout view, and the Check Spelling and Grammar check box is selected, Word stops responding when it reaches a blank header or footer that contains a paragraph mark.

NOTE: To select the Check Spelling and Grammar check box, on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Spelling and Grammar tab.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, open the document in any view except page layout.

RESOLUTION

To resolve the problem described in this article, obtain and install the latest Microsoft Word 97 update from the following Microsoft Web site:

IMPORTANT NOTE: Microsoft Word 97 post-service release fixes are cumulative. The latest update contains all of the fixes since Service Release 2. If you install the latest update for Word 97, you do not need to install any other updates after Service Release 2.
