SUMMARY
When you install Internet Explorer on a Windows 2000-based or a Windows XP-based computer, Internet Explorer Setup updates only a subset of the components that are installed with Internet Explorer on other operating systems. This behavior is designed to minimize the set of protected operating system components that are updated by Internet Explorer and to allow you to upgrade Internet Explorer without introducing other new features. This article describes the Setup behavior of Internet Explorer on a Windows 2000-based or a Windows XP-based computer.

To install additional features or update protected operating system components that are not included with Internet Explorer for Windows 2000 or Windows XP (such as Messenger or a later version of Windows Media Player), install a standalone version of the program that you want to add or update.

When you install an uncustomized version of Internet Explorer 5.x, only core browser and scripting files are installed on your computer. You cannot customize the Internet Explorer installation or use the advanced options in the Internet Explorer Setup program. When you install an uncustomized version of Internet Explorer 6, only core browser files, scripting files,. the Internet Explorer Exception Pack, Outlook Express 6, and Windows Media Player version 6.4 (Windows 2000 only) are installed on your computer. You cannot customize the Internet Explorer installation or use the advanced options in the Internet Explorer Setup program.
However, you can install a customized version of Internet Explorer that is created using Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK). You can use customized versions of Internet Explorer that are created by using IEAK to apply branding (custom logo, title bar, favorites, and others) from your company or your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Note that you cannot add additional components (NetMeeting, Media Player, and others) even if you install Internet Explorer from an IEAK build, unless your corporate administrator or ISP added these components using the Add Custom Components feature in IEAK.
