This article was previously published under Q256150

BUG #: 4691 (plato7x)

SYMPTOMS

When you install a localized language version of a service pack for OLAP Services, and the service pack language does not match the language of the current SQL Server OLAP Services installation, the service pack install may fail. The symptoms of the install failure vary. Incorrect error messages may occur or the setup completes but has mixed language files, which results in an invalid installation of OLAP Services.

Various scenarios and their results are listed in the "More Information" section.

CAUSE

The application of a language specific service pack on an existing installation of another language is not supported.

WORKAROUND

Download the correct language version of the service pack and then install the service pack.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in SQL Server OLAP Services version 7.0.

MORE INFORMATION

German-Japanese

If a SQL Server OLAP services German service pack is applied to a Japanese installation, the following errors are reported in succession:

Title_Captionbar - entry not found in the string table

Title_Main - entry not found in the string table

Message_1 - entry not found in the string table

After these errors occur, a message box appears, which does not have any text, and the installation exits when you press the OK button.

Japanese-Korean

When you attempt to install a Japanese version service pack on a computer with a Korean version, the install process does not start. When the Setup.exe file is run the cursor may momentarily change to an hourglass, but there is no CPU utilization and the install screen does not appear.

Japanese-German

If you apply a Japanese service pack version onto a computer with the German version, the installation continues without any warnings but then shows mixed language dialog boxes during the install. If you see mixed language dialog boxes during the install, you should immediately cancel the install. If you continue, the install completes, but the OLAP Manager displays consist of unreadable information. This also results in invalid information in the OLAP repository. If the setup completes, you must uninstall and then reinstall OLAP Services. You will also have to restore the OLAP repository from the backup.

Japanese-US

If you apply a Japanese version service pack on a US version installation, an unreadable warning message displays. If you press the OK button, the message dialog box setup exits.

US-NonUS

If you attempt to install the US service pack on a Japanese or German version installation, the message "This Service Pack is for another language" occurs, and thus prevents the installation.

German - German Alpha

If you attempt to install the German service pack on a German Alpha platform, the warning message "This Service Pack is for another language" occurs and thus prevents the install. The German Alpha install actually uses the US version of OLAP and requires the install of the US service pack.

Korean

The Korean install of OLAP Services uses the US version. If you want to upgrade to a service pack, the upgrade requires the US version of the service pack.
