SYMPTOMS

If the Enable folder view for FTP sites option is enabled and you use Internet Explorer to manage the content on a UNIX FTP server, you may not be able to delete folders.

CAUSE

Internet Explorer uses the FTP list command instead of the nlst command to enumerate the files within the folder to delete on the FTP server. Using the list command on a UNIX FTP server returns the list of files plus other additional information that may or may not be processed correctly by Internet Explorer.

WORKAROUND

Use an FTP program such as Ftp.exe for folder maintenance on an FTP server.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

According to the FTP Request for Comments (RFC 959), you should use the nlst command instead of the list command if a file list is to be processed automatically.
