To troubleshoot Exchange installations:

  1. If the ForestPrep command does not work, make sure the account has the following permissions:
    • Schema Admins
    • Enterprise Admins
    • Local Admin rights to the server
  2. If the DomainPrep command does not work, make sure the account has the following permissions:
    • Domain Admins
    • Local Admin rights to the server
  3. For any other Setup failures, gather the following information, and then contact Microsoft Product Support Services:
    • Exchange Server Setup log files
    • Event log files
    • Account used for the installation
    • Server type where Setup is being run (is it a member server, domain controller?)
    • Whether the type of domain is an Exchange root or child domain
    • Name of the domain controller/global catalog server that is the SchemaMaster
