XFOR: Trailing Spaces in Lotus Notes Address Causes Exchange 2000 to Generate NDR

Article ID: 255717

Article Last Modified on 2/21/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q255717

SYMPTOMS

When you send a message from Lotus Notes to Exchange 2000 Server through the Microsoft Exchange Connector for Lotus Notes, Exchange 2000 generates a non-delivery report (NDR) you receive the following error message:

Message contains empty recipients list, purging item automatically.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if a Microsoft Windows account or contact is created, and there is a space in the Notes proxy address between the name and the site/organization. For example:

User1 /First Administrative Group/MMSPlat

When directory synchronization (dirsync) occurs, it takes the Notes proxy address and strips the trailing spaces to create the address in the Notes Address Book. This causes the address to be different than the address in Exchange 2000.

WORKAROUND

Verify that the Notes proxy address does not have any trailing spaces.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
