SYMPTOMS

When you are running the Schema Upgrade utility (Schupgr.exe), you may receive the following error message:

Schupgr.exe returns a SSPI Bind Failed 82...

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if Kerberos and/or Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) resource records are not available when you try to upgrade the schema. The Schema Upgrade tool tries to perform an LDAP bind to Active Directory. This includes passing a location in the directory to which to bind and credentials to be used for the bind process.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, verify that SRV records are present for both Kerberos and LDAP on your Domain Name System (DNS) server. These records are required for Schupgr.exe to work correctly. If you are using a third-party DNS server, you can use the Netlogon.dns file to import the entries. The file is located in the %SystemRoot%\System32\Config folder.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
