Windows 2000 Upgrade Is Cancelled by Starting Windows 98/95 During Windows 2000 Setup

SYMPTOMS

If you start upgrading your Microsoft Windows 98/95-based computer to Windows 2000 but choose to start Windows 98/95 when Windows 2000 Setup restarts for the first time, the upgrade is cancelled. Also, the Boot.ini file no longer has an entry for Windows 2000 Setup.



CAUSE

This issue occurs because Windows 2000 Setup is interrupted when you chose to start Windows 98/95 when Windows 2000 Setup restarted for the first time.



RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, start Windows 2000 Setup again, and permit Setup to continue until it finishes.

WARNING: If you start Windows 95 or Windows 98 after Windows 2000 Setup has been started, you may experience data loss or damage to your computer. Because of this, Microsoft does not recommend interrupting Windows 2000 Setup unless absolutely needed.

The following list contains potential issues you may experience if you start Windows 95 or Windows 98 after Windows 2000 Setup has been started:

  • Registry changes could have been made.
  • Files could be copied to new locations.
  • User settings may be changed.
  • Programs could be installed that prevent Setup from completing and /or some programs may not be migrated properly.
  • Hardware could be added or reconfigured.
