SYMPTOMS
When you log on to a computer with a new installation of Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional or Microsoft Windows 2000 Server for the first time, the sounds that Windows 2000 assigns to certain events are not played. However, the sounds are played the next time you log on.

To work around this behavior, log off the computer and then log on again, or restart the computer.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
