SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to print a Microsoft Publisher 2000 SR-1 publication containing color images to a color printer, you may experience the following symptoms:

  • The images are printed in black and white or grayscale.
  • Text and autoshapes are printed in their correct colors.


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the following conditions are true:

  • You are running Publisher 2000 SR-1 on a Microsoft Windows 95-based computer.
  • You sent your last print job to a black and white printer.


NOTE: Publisher 2000 does not update the Dev_Mode registry setting when you change from a black and white printer to a color printer.

The Dev_Mode registry setting contains all of the printer device specific information such as color support, number of copies, and default page size.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods if you are running Publisher 2000 SR-1.

Download and Run the PubDev2k VBScript to Toggle the Dev_Mode Registry Setting

To download and run the PubDev2k VBScript script to toggle the Dev_Mode registry setting:

  1. Obtain and install the Publisher 2000 SR-1 update.

    If you have already installed SR-1, verify that it is properly installed. To do this:

    1. Start Publisher 2000.
    2. On the Help menu, click About Microsoft Publisher.

      The first line of text in the About Microsoft Publisher window indicates whether or not the patch is properly installed.
  2. Download and run the PubDev2k.exe file, and then follow the instructions in the Readme.txt file that is packaged in this executable file.

The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file. NOTE: To run the PubDev2k.exe file, Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or later must be installed on your computer. Publisher 2000 automatically installs Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.

Upgrade Your Version of Microsoft Windows

To resolve this issue, upgrade your version of Windows to Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, or Microsoft Windows 2000.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Publisher 2000.
