Err Msg: Could Not Copy Command.com onto Target Disk

Q255522

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade Windows 98 to Windows 2000, if you start Windows 2000 in MS-DOS mode and run the Bootdisk.bat batch file, you may receive the following error message:

Could not copy COMMAND.COM onto target disk
Startup disk is ready.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Command.com file is not located in the root folder of your disk. When you upgrade to Windows 2000, the Command.com file is removed from the root folder so that it does not interfere with the operation of Windows 2000.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, manually create a Windows 98 Startup disk. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Restart your computer normally in Windows 2000.
  2. Insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
  3. Insert the Startup disk that you were creating when you received the error message listed at the beginning of this article into the floppy drive.
  4. Double-click My Computer, double-click the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows 98 CD-ROM, and then double-click the Win98 folder.
  5. Double-click the Base5.cab cabinet file, and then copy the following files to the disk in the floppy drive:

    • Aspi2dos.sys
    • Aspi4dos.sys
    • Aspi8dos.sys
    • Aspi8u2.sys
    • Aspicd.sys
    • Btcdrom.sys
    • Btdosm.sys
    • Command.com
    • Extract.exe
    • Fdisk.exe
    • Findramd.exe
    • Flashpt.sys
    • Himem.sys
    • Oakcdrom.sys
    • Ramdrive.sys

For information about how to copy files, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type copying files, click Overview, and then click Display.

  6. In the Win98 folder double-click the Precopy1.cab cabinet file, and then copy the Drvspace.bin file to the floppy disk.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
