WINS Does Not Back Up Database During Shutdown

SYMPTOMS

A Windows 2000-based Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) server does not back up the WINS database during server shutdown, even if the Back up database during server shutdown option is enabled.

RESOLUTION

As a workaround, stop WINS manually before shutting down the computer by using one of the following methods:

  • At a command prompt, type net stop wins.
  • Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, click Services, right-click Windows Internet Naming Service, and then click Stop.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
