SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Word 2000 as your e-mail editor to reply to a specific e-mail message, Outlook 2000 stops responding.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following are true:

  • The e-mail message contains the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) Enriched text format, which is a format that Outlook does not fully support.
  • The e-mail message text ends with a non-space followed by a space or a tab.

When Outlook encounters a MIME format that it does not understand, it treats the text data as Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). If you use Word as your e-mail editor, the incorrect HTML text is sent to Word for interpretation. When Word encounters HTML data that is missing required tags and that ends in the non-space or space character pair, it stops responding.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Office 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, turn off Word as your e-mail editor and reply to the message with the built-in Outlook editor.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Office 2000 Service Pack 2.

MORE INFORMATION

Eudora Pro 3.x and BlitzMail (a proprietary e-mail system that is used by academic institutions such as Dartmouth) are the two most common e-mail clients that send data in the MIME Enriched text format.
