This article was previously published under Q255156

SYMPTOMS

When you install Visio Professional 5.0 or Visio Technical 5.0, you can select the option to add a Visio button to the toolbars of compatible Microsoft Office 97 programs. If the compatible Office 97 program is running shared from a server, Visio Setup will not add the Visio button to the toolbars of Office 97 programs. Although Visio Professional 5.0 and Visio Technical 5.0 Setup can only add the Visio button to locally installed Office 97 program, you can manually add the Visio button to shared Office 97 program.

RESOLUTION

To install the Visio button to the toolbars of shared Office 97 program:

  1. Log on to the server as the Administrator, install Microsoft Office 97 on the server for shared use, and then reinstall Visio, either locally or onto the server for shared use. For instructions on installing Microsoft Office 97 to a server for shared use, see the instructions included on the Office 97 CD. For instructions on installing Visio Professional 5.0 or Visio Technical 5.0 to a server for shared use, see the Network.txt file included in the Visio folder on the Visio CD.

'NOTE': As the administrator, you would not want to set up these programs to run from your workstation because of permissions issues pertaining to the correct usage of user configuration files. For example, in a shared network installation of Visio 5.0, a Visio.ini file will be created in the shared Visio\System folder on the server unless either Visio32.exe or the Visio folder has been marked read-only through the networking software. If either Visio32.exe or the Visio folder is marked read-only, a Visio.ini file will be created in each user's Windows folder the first time that they run Visio Professional from the server, allowing them to retain their own Visio Professional configuration settings.

However, after a Visio.ini file has been created in the shared Visio\System folder, it will override the creation or use of any Visio.ini file on the local workstations. If it is intended that all users retain their own Visio.ini file, simply delete the Visio.ini file from the shared location and confirm that either the Visio32.exe or the Visio folder has, in fact, been marked as read-only. This holds true for the Office 97 programs and their user configuration files.
  2. On the server, delete the Normal.dot, "Insert Visio Button.xls," and "Insert Visio Button.dot" files from the Office 97 folders.
  3. Log on to a workstation as a User.
  4. Install a shared or local copy of Visio to the workstation. (When you install Visio before Office 97, Visio Setup skips the Visio toolbar installation options.
  5. Install Office 97 to the workstation from the server.
  6. Set up the Visio button for Microsoft Word 97:
    1. Copy the "Insert Visio Button.dot" file from the Visio\System\Custom folder on the server to the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates folder on the workstation.
    2. In the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup folder, create a shortcut to the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\Insert Visio Button.dot file. The shortcut file named "Insert Visio Button.dot" has an arrow in the lower-left corner, indicating it is a shortcut.
    3. Start Word. The Visio button appears on the Word toolbar. Click the Visio button to test the operation. Visio should open in-place in the Word document.
  7. Set up the Visio button for Microsoft Excel 97:
    1. Copy the "Insert Visio Button.xls" file from the Visio\System\Custom folder on the server to the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates folder on the workstation.
    2. In the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Xlstart folder, create a shortcut to the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\Insert Visio Button.xls file. The shortcut file named "Insert Visio Button.xls" has an arrow in the lower-left corner, indicating it is a shortcut.
    3. Change the default startup folder of Excel to the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Xlstart folder:
      1. In Excel, click Options on the Tools menu.
      2. In the Options dialog box, click the General tab.
      3. In the Alternative Startup File Location text box, type the path name for the Xlstart folder, C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Xlstart.
    4. Start Excel. The Visio button should be on the Excel toolbar. Click the Visio button to test the operation. Visio should open in-place in the Excel worksheet.

Additional Workarounds

Open a Visio drawing in an Office 97 program by clicking Object on the Insert menu. In the Insert Object dialog box, select Visio 5 Drawing, and then click OK. Visio should open in-place in the Office 97 program.

Or, install Office 97 locally to the workstation and install Visio to the workstation either locally or for shared use from a server.
