SYMPTOMS

In Visio Maps, you can add addresses to a map by geocoding an external data file, such as a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet or text file, that contains street addresses for locations within a single state or in multiple states. To geocode addresses for more than one state at a time, you must install all the necessary street files (.edg) in the same folder. By default, street files are installed in the VMData\USStates folder, in individual state folders that are named after a state's two-letter postal abbreviation as shown in the following picture.

NOTE: To install the street files for every state requires approximately 500 megabytes (MB) of disk space.

RESOLUTION

To install the street files into the same folder, follow these steps:

  1. Insert Visio Maps CD 1 into your CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. Type d:\setup -fedg (where d is the letter of your CD-ROM drive).
  4. Click OK and follow the instructions on the screen. You will be prompted for CDs 2 and 3.

After Setup is finished, start Visio Maps, and then on the Tools menu, click Get External Data. When the Get External Data Wizard prompts you to Select the Visio Maps data file that contains locations corresponding to the addresses or zip codes in your data, select the Usa.edg file in the folder that Setup created for all of the street files.
