SYMPTOMS

After you install Service Release C for Visio 5.0, you cannot open a Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 development environment (Microsoft Visual Basic, Microsoft Visual J++, and so on.). When you try, you receive a message saying that the program cannot open the correct version of the Comdlg32.ocx file.

CAUSE

The Visio 5.0c Setup program replaces the system file Comdlg32.ocx, even if the version on your computer is newer than the one that is included with the service release. The version that is included with Visual Studio 6.0 is newer than the one that comes with Visio 5.0c.

RESOLUTION

To solve this problem, restore the newer version of the Comdlg32.ocx file. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the Visual Studio 6.0 CD in the CD-ROM drive.
  2. In Windows Explorer, copy the Comdlg32.ocx file from the Visual Studio CD to the appropriate folder for your operating system. If you use Microsoft Windows 95 or 98, copy the file to Windows\System; if you use Microsoft Windows NT, copy the file to Windows\System32.
  3. Click Start, and then click Run.
  4. In the Open box, type regsvr32.exe comdlg32.ocx to register the new version of the file.
