MORE INFORMATION

Modifications to the Installation Process

When you install Visio Maps 1.0a or Service Release A for Visio Maps over Visio 5.0 (Standard, Professional, or Technical), the Setup program will recommend that you update Visio 5.0 to 5.0a by installing Service Release A for Visio 5.0. Service Release A for Visio 5.0 improves results when saving a map as an HTML page for distribution on the Web. Service Release A for Visio 5.0 is located on the Visio Maps 1.0a CD 1 and the Service Release A for Visio Maps CD, and is included with Service Release C for the U.S. and International English versions of Visio 5.0. The following files are available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

When you install Visio Maps 1.0a or Service Release A for Visio Maps on a Windows 95 computer that uses Comctl32.dll version 4.00.950, the Setup program will recommend and offer to update the file to version 4.70. This version fixes the run-time error that occurs with the earlier version when you perform a drag-and-drop operation on the Local United States map shape. You can choose not to update the file during Setup and install it later by running Com32upd.exe, which is located on the Visio Maps 1.0a CD 1 or the Service Release A for Visio Maps CD.

The Setup program adds these files to the Visio\Samples\Maps folder:

  • Store Locations.vsd (new map sample)
  • Florists.xls (geocoded in the Store Locations map)
  • Florists.shp (part of the geocoded layer in the Store Locations map)
  • Florists.shx (part of the geocoded layer in the Store Locations map)
  • Florists.dbf (part of the geocoded layer in the Store Locations map)
  • New York Sales.vsd (new map sample)
  • NY Sales.xls (joined to the New York Sales map)

The existing sample map, Visio Maps Sample.vsd, has been moved from the root of the Visio\Samples folder to Visio\Samples\Maps.

DAO 3.0 is now fully installed, even if you have completed a partial installation. This helps alleviate the difficulty with joining external data to a map layer.

Modifications to Help

Visio Maps Help (Vismaps.hlp) includes more information about working with your own data, and an improved index to help you find the information you need. Visio Maps Help now includes:

  • More procedures for geocoding different types of location data, such as zip codes, street addresses, and latitude and longitude data.

  • More information about formatting your data files to work with the Get External Data Wizard.

  • Better integration with Visio Help so that you can display Visio Maps Help topics while you are working in Visio, and also when Visio Maps is open for editing.

More Info buttons have been added to the Get External Data Wizard to help guide you through the process of geocoding or joining an external data file to a map.

Modifications to Map Layers

  • Fill layers (like states or countries) no longer become point or line layers (like cities or roads).

  • If Visio Maps is unable to display any map layers at all (because they are too detailed or too large for the current zoom level), it will show a message box advising you to zoom in or out until the layers become visible. The message box includes a Help button, which provides more detailed information.

  • The "Invalid array index" error that appeared when removing a layer in the Map Layers dialog box will no longer appear.

  • The color and pattern of a fill layer (such as states or counties) are not dropped when you zoom in on a map.

Modifications to Format Menu Commands

  • The Dot Density dialog box is initialized with an appropriate value to use for each dot.

  • The Apply button in the Dot Density dialog box will now work when only the size of the symbol is changed.

  • The color and size ramps in the Graduated Symbol dialog box will work correctly for a map layer that includes geocoded or joined data.

  • The Format Wizard will retain your selections if you click the Back button to move backward through the wizard screens.

  • When using the Format Wizard to create a dot density map, you can use a decimal point when specifying the value for each dot.

Modifications to the Geocoding Process

  • A list of locations not found is generated after the geocoding process. This list is saved as a text file named NotFound.txt and placed in the same folder as the new layer files created by the geocoding process. It includes a "best guess" for any street addresses that weren't found, which allows you to make adjustments to your external data file as needed.

  • The geocoding results dialog box that appears at the end of the geocoding process has a Help button to display a topic that describes how to read the NotFound.txt file.

  • DAO 3.0 is now fully installed, even if you have completed a partial installation. This was done to help alleviate the difficulty with joining external data to a map layer.

  • The Get External Data Wizard will "remember" the last file format you used when geocoding or joining an external data file and will default to that format (instead of Access) each time.

  • Large currency values in an external data file are interpreted correctly.

  • The Get External Data Wizard supports more latitude/longitude formats. The wizard can read coordinates in a variety of formats, including decimal format and degrees, minutes, seconds. For example, all of the following are supported ways of expressing the latitude/longitude coordinates for Honolulu, Hawaii:

    Latitude Longitude
    21,18,25 -157,51,30
    21N19 157W52
    21° 18' 25" N 157° 51' 30" W
    21.31725 N 157.80423 W
    21.31725 -157.80423
    21 18 25 N 157 51 30 W

  • The Get External Data Wizard correctly handles zip codes that start with zero.

  • The Get External Data Wizard correctly handles zip+4 zip codes.

Modifications to Label Shapes

  • Label shapes will stay in their correct positions if you copy and paste a map into another program, such as Microsoft PowerPoint or Microsoft Word.

  • Label shapes will stay in their correct positions when you group a map with other items on the Visio drawing page.

  • The Feature Label shapes automatically resize to fit varying amounts of text.

Modifications to Other Features

  • TrueType characters used as symbols for a layer in a map will appear in the legend.

  • When using Visio Maps with Visio 5.0, it is no longer necessary to double-click when SHIFT-selecting map features.

  • When a lot of data is selected, a progress meter appears. The meter includes a Cancel button.

  • The Export Data Wizard honors the attributes you specified in the Selected Data dialog box. It is no longer necessary to reselect the attributes when the data is exported.

  • When a Visio drawing containing a map is created on one computer and viewed on another, the map will stay the same size.

  • A map will no longer resize if a Visio 5.0 window is maximized or minimized while Visio Maps is active.

  • The color and pattern of a fill layer (such as states or counties) are not dropped when you zoom in on a map.
