File: How to Sort by Month in a Field with Dates

Last reviewed: October 26, 1994
Article ID: Q25451

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft File, versions 1.0, 1.01, 1.02, 1.04, 1.05, 2.0

A field formatted as Date will sort chronologically in Microsoft File. This, however, is not always the desired result. If a field with dates is to be sorted by month, the field should be formatted as Text, not as Date, where each entry is input in a "mm/dd/yy" format.

If the field has already been formatted as Date and data has already been put into the field, the field can be changed from Date to Text without losing data. The procedure for changing the field type of any field is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

Additional reference words: 1.00 1.01 1.02 1.04 1.05 2.00
