SYMPTOMS

During a cluster stress test, a connection problem may occur when you perform a failover.

CAUSE

During automatic reconnection for the cluster node, the original connection's mutex is released to make a new connection, and the new connection takes the mutex. However, the new connection is not made, and the original connection's mutex is not retaken.

A mutex is an inter-process synchronization object whose state is set to signaled when it is not owned by any thread, and nonsignaled when it is owned. Only one thread at a time can own a mutex object.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 1.
