SYMPTOMS

If your drawing page is larger than the size of the paper that you are printing it on, the drawing will be "tiled," or printed on the number of pieces of paper that are required to fit the page. In most cases, the parts of the drawing close to the edge of the page will overlap between pages. In other words, the same shapes will be printed on two pages.

RESOLUTION

Although you cannot determine exactly where the page will overlap, you can set up your drawing's page size to keep overlapping to a minimum.

NOTE: Although these procedures work in all versions of all Visio products, menu commands and dialog boxes mentioned here are specific to versions 5.0 and later.

To minimize overlap:

  1. Estimate how many pages your drawing will require (if you don't know, it's better to overestimate). In this example, the total drawing size is 17x22 inches. This means that the drawing will require four 8.5-by-11-inch pages--two across, and two down--in portrait orientation.
  2. Determine the margins to set in the Print Setup dialog box. In this example, use the default 1/4 inch on all sides.
  3. On the Edit menu, point to Drawing Page, and then click Size & Scale.
  4. In the Drawing Size/Scale dialog box, click Custom Scaled Drawing Size, and then enter the dimensions of your total drawing size minus the total of the margins. Then click OK. In this example, enter 16.5x21.5 inches.
  5. To better gauge where to position shapes and to avoid placing them on a page break, place a guide where each page break will occur. In this example place a vertical guide at the 8-inch mark on the ruler, and a horizontal guide at the 11-inch mark.
  6. Ensure that your shapes are placed away from the guides to keep them from getting cut off the edge of one page and continuing on the next.
