SYMPTOMS
When you try to install the following
- The Visio Professional Shapes and Add-ons 5.0 product over Visio Technical 5.0 Plus
- The Visio Technical Shapes and Add-ons 5.0 product over Visio Enterprise
you may receive the following error message:
CAUSE
The Setup program for the Shapes and Add-ons products recognizes versions of Visio that were released before the Shapes and Add-ons products. Because Visio Technical 5.0 Plus and Visio Enterprise 5.0x were released after the Shapes and Add-ons products, the Setup program for the Shapes and Add-ons products cannot find the information it needs in the registry.
RESOLUTION
To solve this problem, add a key to the registry so that the Setup program for the Shapes and Add-ons product recognizes your version of Visio.
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To open the registry:
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Run dialog box, type regedit, and then click OK.
After you open Registry Editor, follow the procedure that is appropriate for your version of Visio.
To Install Visio Professional Shapes and Add-ons over Visio Technical 5.0 Plus:
- In Registry Editor, browse to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Visio\Visio Technical
- Click the Visio Technical key, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click Key.
A new key appears with the name New Key #1 highlighted. - Rename the key by typing 5.0, and then press ENTER.
- Right-click the 5.0 key, point to New, and then click String Value.
- Change the name of the new value to InstallDir, and then press ENTER.
- Right-click the InstallDir value, and then click Modify.
- In the Edit String dialog box, type the path to the folder in which you installed Visio Technical 5.0 Plus (for example, c:\program files\visio).
- Click OK.
- Quit Registry Editor, restart your computer, and install the Visio Professional Shapes and Add-ons product.
To install Visio Technical Shapes and Add-ons over Visio Enterprise 5.0:
- In Registry Editor, browse to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Visio
- Click the Visio key, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click Key.
A new key appears with the name New Key #1 highlighted. - Rename the key by typing Visio Professional, and press ENTER.
- Right-click the Visio Professional key, point to New, and then click Key.
- Rename the new key by typing 5.0, and then press ENTER.
- Right-click the 5.0 key, point to New, and then click String Value.
- Rename the new value InstallDir, and then press ENTER.
- Right-click the InstallDir value, and click Modify.
- In the Edit String dialog box, type the path to the folder in which you installed Visio Enterprise (for example, c:\program files\visio).
- Click OK.
- Quit Registry Editor, restart your computer, and install the Visio Technical Shapes and Add-ons product.
