DFS May Not Honor Site Membership When DFS Server Submits Commands

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

Distributed File System (DFS) may not honor site membership when users submit commands to a DFS share from a DFS server. For example, if you open a command prompt window on a DFS server and submit a DIR command to a DFS share backed by multiple replicas in multiple sites, a random replica may be selected. This applies only when operations are done from a DFS server.

This behavior occurs when commands are submitted from DFS servers, as opposed to clients. Commands such as DIR, submitted from the server, are not guaranteed to arrive at a replica that is in the same site as the DFS server.

DFS communication from clients works properly with site memberships.
